Phnom Penh (FN), June 30 – Rice export quotas from Cambodia to China are slated to increase from the 200,000 tons in 2017 to 300,000 tons in 2018, according to a senior official from the Cambodia Rice Federation.
China is the largest importer of Cambodian rice.
“The principle of installing quotas for rice exports to China has been agreed by the Royal Government of Cambodia in an earlier meeting," said Moul Sarith, secretary-general of the Cambodian Rice Federation.
We are waiting for the Ministry of Commerce and the Cambodia Rice Federation to prepare documents for future agreements," he added.
The heads of the two governments laid out their principles to support the increase of the rice quota to China.
The next step is for the Ministry of Commerce, along with the participation of Green Trade and the Cambodian Rice Federation to continue work on the details until a r consensus is reached and the deal is signed at the MOU”, said the secretary-general.
In 2017, Mr. Moul Sarith claimed that Cambodian rice farmers would be able to meet or exceed the new quota because over 100,000 tons of rice have already been exported to China.
In the first 5 months of 2017, Cambodia exported nearly 260,000 tons of rice to foreign markets, an increase of 10%, of which nearly 90,000 tons went to China.
