Phnom Penh (FN), June 28 – Prime Minister Hun Sen has expressed deep concern regarding recent attempts to distort Cambodia's history.

Speaking at a ceremony to commemorate the 66th anniversary of the formation of the Cambodian People's Party (CPP), Hun Sen had this to say:

"You have to remember that from 1953 to 1970, the writer of history were the Sangkum Reastr Niyum led by Norodom Sihanouk, the Father of the Nation.

On March 18, 1970, Lon Nol led a coup against his majesty and wrote history to reflect that "Norodom Sihanouk is a traitor, and Lon Nol is a patriot."

If others [Sam Rainsy] rule, our history will be changed again."

The speech comes after the former leader of the CNRP, Sam Rainsy, posted a video on Facebook railing against the Cambodian People's Party (CPP).

In it, the former opposition leader accuses the Cambodian People's Party of being a puppet party-created and controlled by Vietnam.

CPP spokesman Suos Yara said this act of distortion has made Rainsy a "newsreader in the sea," a reference to Rainsy’s current exile.

Sam Rainsy is the son of Sam Sary, an anti-Sangkum Reastr Niyum.

In "General Politics", an essay written by King Father Norodom Sihanouk, Sam Sary was mentioned as a treacherous fellow who shook hands with Son Ngoc Thanh, the Leader of Khmer Krom Movement, to overthrow the king to serve foreign interests.

The Prime Minister is concerned that if the former leader of the opposition wins, he (Sam Rainsy) will celebrate Sam Sary and Son Ngoc Thanh as heroes, while demonizing His Majesty King Norodom Sihanouk as a traitor.
