Siem Reap (FN), June 26 – Anne Lemaistre, the UNESCO Representative in Cambodia, has voiced support for a crackdown against illegal construction at the Angkor complex.

The Apsara Authority has coordinated with the owners of the illegal structures and has asked them to dismantle the buildings voluntarily.

The Authority will be obligated to take necessary measures against those that don't in order to ensure Angkor maintains its statutes as a World Heritage Site.

“We would like to express congratulations to the Apsara Authority in preventing illegal construction in Zone 1 and 2 as stipulated in the agreement between Cambodia and UNESCO,” stated Ms. Lemaistre, in a press conference after the 28th Technical Committee Meeting of the ICC-Angkor.

"We encourage the Apsara Authority to continue to protect Zone 1 and Zone 2 and to implement in accordance to the law as much as possible. We will have a workshop on conservation issues, and I think for now we are doing well,” she added.
