Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 7 - Cambodian Delegate Minister Jean François Tan said that Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese commended Cambodia's remarkable resilience, acknowledging its transformation from a history of tragedy, including a genocidal regime, to become a strong, peaceful, and politically stable nation closely aligned with Southeast Asian counterparts.
Jean François Tan spoke during a press conference on Thursday (Mar. 7) after Samdech Thipadei concluded his visit to Australia.
Anthony Albanese made the remarks during a bilateral meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on the sidelines of the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit 2024.
The delegate minister added that Australia had set out a clear Australian economic strategy for Southeast Asia, and as part of its implementation, Australia aims to collaborate with Cambodia, focusing on enhancing productivity in agriculture, promoting science in the education sector, and boosting tourism sector.
Delegate Minister Jean François Tan further noted that a bilateral agreement on air freight services has been signed between the Cambodian and Australian governments through their Foreign Ministries. The primary objective is to strengthen Cambodia-Australia relations, with a specific emphasis on advancing the tourism sector.
Australia and Cambodia enjoy a partnership built on a strong historical foundation. Our formal diplomatic relations began in 1952, demonstrating Australia’s early recognition of Cambodia’s independence. Over the past seven decades, Australia has always been instrumental in Cambodia’s socio-economic development through its pivotal role in the 1991 Paris Peace Agreements, trade and investment, as well as continuous assistance in many fields such as education, agriculture, infrastructure, demining and health.
