Phnom Penh (FN), May 3 - Yang Jiechi, Councilor of the People's Republic of China, assured Prime Minister Hun Sen that tensions surrounding the South China Sea remain low, mostly due to the friendly relationship between China and the Philippines.

“China also has a solid relationship with U.S. President Xi Jinping just returned from a visit and there are talks of President Trump going to China within the next two years,” said Yang Jiechi.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated Cambodia's stance with regards to the South China Sea issue remains unchanged.

China hopes that the ASEAN Summit in Manila will produce a beneficial outcome, but noted that some countries who are unhappy will cause the issues.

“The CPP did not relent because the South China Sea issue is a security issue by nature, and is not relegated to Cambodia alone,” stated Prime Minister Hun Sen.

The premier recognizes that China has strong ties to the Philippines and Vietnam.

The U.S. and Vietnam have promised to find plausible solutions to relieve the tension.

The PM reiterated that resolving conflicts using peaceful strategy is the principles of international law.

The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) is an important mechanism for resolving issues such as the one facing China and the South China Sea.
