Phnom Penh (FN), April 22 - The Ministry of Agriculture will begin examining stockpiles of rice at millers and exporters across Cambodia.
The examination will be conducted in an effort to track down Tricyclazole, a chemical that the European Union has banned, according to a senior official of Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MoAFF).
"Cambodia has exported an estimated 54,000 tons of rice in 2016 and 63% of all rice exports are destined for the EU, the largest rice market and an important partner trade for Cambodia," stated Hean Vanhorn, director of the Department of Agriculture.
“So, if Cambodia’s rice is found to contain Tricyclazole, there will be a problem with the European market,” he added.
Song Saron, President of Amru Rice strongly supports the ministry's action to prevent any future problems.
The EU will not import any rice containing Tricyclazole over 0.01 mg, effective July 2017.
