Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 6 – Cambodian king Norodom Sihamoni commended head of the Supreme Privy Council, Samdech Techo Hun Sen for initiating the preparation of the 1993 draft Constitution and asking for approval from Cambodian late king father, who was in Pyongyang, North Korea.
Cambodian king Norodom Sihamoni presided over the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the promulgation of the constitution, held on Friday (Oct. 6) at Diamond Island Convention and Exhibition Center, Phnom Penh.
The king expressed his deep gratitude and appreciation to Senate president Say Chhum, former National Assembly president Heng Samrin, and especially former prime minister Hun Sen who took the initiative for the preparation.
After the draft was ready, a high-level delegation led by Samdech Techo, including some members of the Legal Council, visited the Royal Palace in August 1993 in Pyongyang, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to ask for approval from Cambodian late king father Norodom Sihanouk.
After receiving the approval, the draft constitution was approved by the Constituent Assembly on 21 September 1993. It has been the supreme law of the nation and will continue to be obeyed. The Constituent Assembly returned to the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia on 24 September 1993.
On the occasion, his majesty the king expressed his appreciation and gratitude to all the national and international legal scholars who have worked so hard to help draft the 30-year-old National Constitution.
At the same time, king Norodom Sihamoni firmly believed that under the umbrella of the Constitution, all national institutions will continue to fulfill their duties with high responsibility to ensure the development of our nation to achieve the 2030 National Development Goals and by 2050, become a strong and prosperous country, so that the Cambodian people will live in peace and stability, and have a prosperous life.
