Phnom Penh (FN), March 13 -- Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has assisted Cambodia on three major projects regarding environment-water quality, drainage system, and liquid waste management.
According to a press conference held at the Embassy of Japan Monday afternoon, the three projects include conservation forum to improve water quality, effective implementation on environmental impact assessment and pollution control through the Ministry of Environment’s capacity development; and master plan on the improvement of drainage system and liquid waste management in Phnom Penh.
According to JICA’s staff Say Bora, the project on environment-water quality is to aims to create a forum to conserve and improve water quality of Tonle Sap long-term by strengthening scientific and administrative capacity. This project has been running since April 2016 and will end in 5 years.
The second project is to effectively implement environmental impact assessment and control pollution through capacity development of the Ministry to carry out its mission in ensuring the protection of the environment and management of natural resources. The project will launch in mid-2017 and is scheduled to be completed in 3 years and a half.
The third project is responsible by the Department of Public Works and Transport, which aims to renovate sewage and waste system and liquid waste management in Phnom Penh. The Japanese government is concerned about the destruction of the system due to waste dumping in the drainage canals. This project will be implemented soon.
JICA has provided various assistances to Cambodia including infrastructure, economy, private sector, agricultural and rural development, clean water supply and drainage system, health, education, public finance, law and judicial reform, gender equity, and mine clearance.
