Phnom Penh (FN), March 13 – Counting from 2010 to 2016, AMK Microfinance Institution Plc. eliminated approximately $2 million debt to clients who passed away, according to AMK’s press release on Monday morning.

The debt elimination by AMK is believed to contribute to easing the burden for family members who are not able to pay the debt.

“Generally, members of the family are responsible for the debt after the debtor passed away. When a family loses income, they will face financial crisis and that will force them to sell valuable properties or even worse move away in order to get over the debt. AMK’s debt elimination policy aims to support poverty alleviation to promote people’s living standard,” according to the press release.

“AMK never wants to see Cambodian people in financial crisis even when their family loses income; this policy is also considered as the condolences to the victim family,” said Kea Borann, CEO of AMK.

“We should not add burden to the family when they are mourning. AMK is not founded just for profit, but to protect our clients and society,” he added.
