Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 22 – On 22 April 2023, OCIC and Thai hypermarket chain BIG C have entered into a Strategic Partnership Agreement to develop the chain’s first hypermarket north of Phnom Penh at the Chroy Changvar Satellite City. The signing was attended by Canadia Group vice chairperson Carolyne Pung, Canadia Group executive vice president Charles Vann, and OCIC director Lim Lychin as well as BIG C COO Gary Hardy and BIG C vice president Charun Chasawat.

The MOU signed between the diversified Cambodian conglomerate and the Thai hypermarket chain aims to create new excitement for Chroy Changvar Satellite City residents and urban residents alike by offering value through the combination of a wider range of premium fresh and dry food items, imported products, a clean and efficient shopping environment, and excellent service.

The BIG C hypermarket will occupy a 2.7 hectare property at Sovann Machha roundabout next to OCIC’s latest commercial development, Sovann Machha.

The signing reflects OCIC's ongoing commitment to developing numerous projects throughout the city. Since then, the pioneering developer continues to work with industry leaders to improve the whole experience in Chroy Changvar Satellite City, bringing the area closer to becoming a self-sustaining city with educational facilities, retail outlets, and more.

“We are pleased to welcome the first BIG C within our Chroy Changvar Satellite City which is envisioned to be Phnom Penh’s newest central business district. This will be one of our anchor commercial establishments that will be directly connected to our newest, Sovann Machha.” shared  Lim Lychin.

“We will remain focused on our goals of making Chroy Changvar Satellite City the Crown Jewel of Phnom Penh, with a slew of other projects that commit to our mission of building opportunities where one can enjoy the best of leisure, entertainment, and business all in one address. These contributions by OCIC can never be measured in terms of the solutions we provide, but in the number of lives that we impacted and bettered throughout the years. This is OCICs continued commitment to everyone which undoubtedly translates to more employment, and economic opportunities for our country, the Kingdom of Cambodia, that in turn would contribute towards propelling human capital and the national economy forward.” Lim Lychin continued.

“We are extremely delighted to be expanding our network in Cambodia with the signing of our first BIG C Hypermarket in Phnom Penh in Chroy Changvar. We opened our first hypermarket in Poipet in 2019, and have expanded 20 small format “BIG C MINI” throughout Phnom Penh and Kampot. We are pleased to be partnering with OCIC and Canadia Group. This progressive step is part of a broader expansion strategy over the next 5 years to develop multiple formats across the whole of Cambodia and indeed SEA region.” Gary Hardy, BIG C’s COO said.

With OCIC developing the Russey Keo bridge which soft-opened to the public in April, together with other key developments such as the entry of global F&B brands such as Starbucks, the construction of various government buildings and state educational facilities, the satellite city north of Phnom Penh is fast taking shape as a new destination for the metropolitans fast growing population as well as investors and international franchises.
