HOUSTON, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush was discharged from hospital on Monday after recovering from pneumonia.

Bush, 92, was discharged from Houston Methodist Hospital after being treated for pneumonia for more than two weeks, his family spokesman Jim McGrath said in a statement.

Bush finished off a last round of antibiotics and worked with physical therapists to build strength before his release, the spokesman said, adding that Bush is thankful for the many prayers and kind messages he received during his hospitalization, as well as the world-class care that both his doctors and nurses provided.

Bush, who was admitted to the hospital on Jan. 14 after experiencing difficulty in breathing, initially thought he'd be out quickly, but his condition worsened on Jan. 18, and doctors inserted a breathing tube. He received the assistance for 48 hours in the hospital's intensive care unit, then improved steadily after the tube was removed. He was transferred to a regular room on Jan. 23.

During his stay in hospital, the former president was joined by his 91-year-old wife Barbara, who was hospitalized as a precaution for bronchitis. She was discharged a week ago.

Born on June 12, 1924, Bush was the 41st U.S. President from 1989 to 1993.
