Phnom Penh (FN), Aug. 25 – UNESCO representative to Cambodia Sardar Umar Alam praised Cambodian government’s effort to conserve and protect the Angkor Heritage Site, speaking in a meeting with Cambodian culture and fine arts minister Phoeurng Sackona, held on 24 August 2022.
On that occasion, Sackona briefed UNESCO representative the inter-ministerial level Orientation Working Group to tackle illegal construction and land encroachment in Angkor site and other areas under the management of Apsara Authority.
Sackona added this campaign aimed to dismantle some illegal structures constructed in the past. It is also part of the action plan of the Apsara Authority to protect the Angkor heritage site, in particular the fight against illegal constructions.
For his part, Sardar Umar Alam praised the efforts to protect the Angkor site. He requested the Apsara Authority to include the progress report of Angkor conservation activities and outcomes of the campaign, which to be submitted to the World Heritage Committee by the end of 2022.
Sardar Umar Alam thanked the Royal Government, especially the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, for warmest hospitality provided to the European Commission vice president and highlighting the cooperation progress such as the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum cooperation, the preparation for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 1970 Convention, the organization of the ICC-Angkor, ICC-Preah Vihear meetings and some other cooperation.
