PHNOM PENH, Nov. 23 (FN) -- A six-week landmine clearance training program for 40 Cambodian soldiers and aid workers ended Tuesday at the People's Liberation Army University of Science and Technology.

The program taught trainees how to handle landmines and explosives, use landmine clearance equipment and conduct landmine actions in accordance with international and United Nations procedures. It also included a field drill.

At Tuesday's closing ceremony, the Chinese government donated land mine clearance and protection equipment to Cambodia, which suffers from severe landmine and explosive remnants as a legacy of war.

Since 1999 China has been providing landmine-related aid to Cambodia through training courses, donating funds and equipment and sending experts to the country.
