HANOI, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam will host its neighboring states at two summits and a conference to discuss sustainable use of Mekong River water and strengthening regional cooperation later this month.
Leaders and heads of governments of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand will join Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc at the seventh Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy Summit (ACMECS 7) and the eighth Cambodia-Laos-Myanmar-Vietnam Summit (CLMV 8).
They will also attend the World Economic Forum (WEF)-Mekong Conference in Hanoi. The three events all take place on Oct. 24-26, Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Dang Dinh Quy said at a press briefing Wednesday.
The two summits will focus on issues of strategic orientation including how to improve competitiveness of Mekong region.
At national level, it will include structural reforms, creating favorable business environment for investors and enterprises while at regional level, it requires cooperation among countries to expand market for investors, enterprises, improve personnel quality, and deal with common challenges of environment and water resource, said a representative of Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the briefing.
According to Quy, the summits, which are meetings among brothers, traditional friends and neighbors, will provide an important mechanism to increase mutual trust, and solve problems of cross-border crimes, environment, regional connectivity and customs clearance.
The summits are said to be the best places to talk about sustainable exploitation of Mekong River water resource, Quy told reporters.
Meanwhile, the WEF Conference on the Mekong Region will bring together some 160 enterprises, including global multinational companies and large regional companies from across ASEAN and the Asia Pacific.
The participants will discuss ideas, policies and initiatives that can best help the region attain its true potential.
Top on the agenda is three foundational pillars that are critical to improve the region's competitiveness, connectivity and economic inclusivity, namely Building Human Capital, Building Fixed Capital, and Building Network Capital, said WEF in a press release.
Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw will pay her first visit to Vietnam during the meetings.
