HANOI, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) — Two wide-body aircraft of Vietnam Airlines suffered engine failure after hitting birds, said the national flag carrier on Monday.
On Sunday night, two Boeing 787 and Boeing 777 aircraft of Vietnam Airlines experienced bird strikes in their engines while landing at Vietnam's northern Noi Bai and southern Tan Son Nhat International Airports.
To ensure safety, the carrier had to stop the two aircraft to check and repair, causing the delay of several international flights on Sunday and Monday.
Over the past time, many planes in Vietnam hit birds, threatening flight safety.
In March, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam even proposed to install a foreign object debris detection system (FODetect) at Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat International Airports in order to banish birds from airport runways.
The system, which would cost over 1.16 trillion Vietnamese dong (52 million U.S. dollars) to install, would be able to monitor runways 24 hours a day, compared to the current method of using human resources to check seven times a day, said the authority.
