MOSCOW, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) — The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Monday that it had detained a Ukrainian military officer in Moscow for allegedly gathering intelligence about the Russian Armed Forces.
Roman Sushchenko, an officer of the Chief Intelligence Office of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, was purposefully collecting state secrets about activities of the Russian Armed Forces and the National Guard, the FSB said in a statement.
The information "could harm the country's defense capacities, once leaked abroad," the statement added.
The FSB has initiated a criminal case against the detainee on charges of espionage.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian national news agency Ukrinform said that Sushchenko is a staff correspondent in France, and that he was "unlawfully detained" on Friday in Moscow, where he was on a private trip.
