GHAZNI, Afghanistan, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) — Up to 80 Taliban militants have been killed as their attack on Afghanistan's eastern Ghazni province has been repelled, provincial Povernor Abdul Karim Matin said Wednesday.
According to the governor, hundreds of Taliban fighters launched a coordinated offensive on Monday to capture Gero district in the province, but the security forces repulsed the attack and the militants retreated after suffering huge casualties.
Up to 80 armed militants had been killed and some 100 others injured, the official added.
He also admitted that five security personnel had been killed and eight others injured during the operations against militants in the embattled Gero district.
Taliban militants who control parts of Ghazni province are yet to make comment on the situation.
