VLADIVOSTOK, Russia, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) — Russia has started military drills in six regions of Siberia and Far East, the Russian news agency TASS reported Tuesday.
"Integrated practical exercises have started simultaneously on eight landfills and training complexes of the Eastern Military District, located in the areas of Transbaikal, Khabarovsk, Primorsky, Amur, Sakhalin, and the Republic of Buryatia," Col. Alexander Gordeyev, the Eastern Military District's press chief, was quoted as saying.
The troop scouts are training to overcome rough waters on military equipment and to conduct shore exploration, added Gordeyev.
He also said that there will be tactical exercises with motorized infantry as well as armored and artillery units.
"About 1,000 soldiers and over 60 pieces of military equipment are involved in the drills," he noted.
Established in 2010 and headquartered in the eastern Khabarovsk region, the Eastern Military District covers the former Far Eastern Military District and part of the former Siberian Military District.
