HO CHI MINH CITY, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Usagi, which made landfall in Vietnam's southern region, has killed one person and damaged many houses, boats and roads, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said on Monday.

Usagi, which hit the southern region on Sunday from Ba Ria Vung Tau province to Ben Tre province before weakening into a tropical depression, killed a man in Ho Chi Minh City, who was driving a motorbike when a big tree fell down on him.

The typhoon damaged 51 houses and 46 ships and boats; inundated 718 hectares of rice and 380 hectares of other crops, 1.5 km of national roads and nearly 2.7 km of dykes. It also uprooted 119 trees.

On Monday, many schools in Ho Chi Minh City and Ninh Thuan province were closed due to heavy rain and flooding.

In 2017, typhoons claimed the lives of 386 people in Vietnam, damaged more than 600,000 houses and caused economic losses of about 60 trillion Vietnamese dong (2.6 billion U.S. dollars), according to the Agriculture Ministry.
