Switzerland (FN), Oct. 23 – Attending the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) 2018 from 22 to 24 October 2018 in Geneva, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, on Monday, received a courtesy call from Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Francis Gurry, where both parties discussed mainly on economic and trade cooperation.

Prime Minister requested Francis to help build Cambodian brand for international recognition, and assist Cambodia to participate in the frameworks of World Intellectual Property treaties.

Prime Minister expressed his gratitude towards WIPO for providing capacity building platform and preparing the National Intellectual Property Strategy for Cambodia that was enacted in 2016.

The premier pledged to cooperate with the WIPO in order to contribute to the development of Cambodian human resources to be able to equally compete in the competitive world.

Francis Gurry praised that Cambodia is a potential country and that some Cambodian brands have shaped Cambodian image in the international stage. Francis reassured that his organization will assist Cambodia to promote intellectual property.

Intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols, names and images used in commerce.

IP is protected in law by, for example, patents, copyright and trademarks, which enable people to earn recognition or financial benefit from what they invent or create. By striking the right balance between the interests of innovators and the wider public interest, the IP system aims to foster an environment in which creativity and innovation can flourish.
