Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 8 - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe expressed his deep appreciation for the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Sen who brought continued progress to the war-torn kingdom.

Japanese Prime Minister Abe expressed his pleasure to welcome Prime Minister Hun Sen's visit to Japan this time, marking the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Shinzo Abe said that 25 years have passed since the election in Cambodia, which was held by UNTAC. Cambodia, which had been known by civil war, has changed to a developed nation.

Abe added that Japan has accompanied Cambodia, and expected that Cambodia will develop further through the unity of Cambodian people and to continue promoting the democratic process. Abe has a strong commitment to boosting premier’s efforts with these goals.

Japanese Prime Minister continued that 2019 is the fruitful year of Mekong-Japan based on the summit held in Japan, and he aims to enhance bilateral relations between Cambodia and Japan by joining hands with Prime Minister Hun Sen to bring progress and prosperity to the entire Mekong region.

Prime Minister Hun Sen and his delegation departed Cambodia Saturday morning for the 10th Mekong-Japan Summit from 6-10 October 2018 in Tokyo, Japan, at the invitation of the Government of Japan, according to foreign affairs ministry’s press release dated on 4 October 2018.

The 10th Mekong-Japan Summit will deliberate and adopt the New Tokyo Strategy, which aims at enhancing connectivity, improving the well-being of people and protecting the environment. The Strategy attaches importance on sustainable development and narrowing the development gap between the Mekong Countries and other ASEAN member countries.
