Phnom Penh (FN), August 28 – The ruling Cambodian People’s Party spokesman Sok Eysan called the request to revive Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) and the demands of other conditions by the former opposition leader Sam Rainsy “crazy imagination”.
The spokesman said Tuesday that dissolving CNRP was a legal implementation. His reaction came after Rainsy recently wrote on Facebook accusing the releases of political prisoners pressured by the international community; and demanded five conditions.
“I, Sam Rainsy, welcome the ongoing release of all political prisoners, starting with more than CNRP officials and activists. CNRP president Kem Sokha also will be shortly released because Hun Sen, under international pressure, has to meet a deadline.”
“The other conditions to be met subsequently are: 1- Re-instatement of the CNRP; 2- Restoration of the rights of 118 CNRP officials to conduct political activities as before Hun Sen’s crackdown; 3-Dropping of all judicial charges against all CNRP leaders and activists and all members of the civil society and the media; 4- Restitution to CNRP activists of more than 5,000 commune councilor positions they won at the June 2017 election; and 5- Organisation of new Senate and National Assembly elections to replace the previous ones that will be declared invalid,” Rainsy added.
CNRP was dissolved by the Supreme Court; 118 CNRP officials could not conduct political activities until 2023; and that CNRP activists of more than 5,000 commune councilor positions were allocated based on legal principles, according to Sok Eysan.
“Rainsy’s claims is just a dream that will never be realised,” said Eysan adding that we could not do anything to change the result of the general election 2018 with over 83% of voter turnout.
