HANOI, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- There will be five to six typhoons and tropical depressions in the South China Sea from now to the end of this year, of which two to three are likely to make landfall in Vietnam, the country's National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said on Monday.
Typhoons and tropical depressions are forecast to hit Vietnam's central region in the coming months. In the 2016-2017 period, more typhoons and tropical depressions made landfall in the country's southern region.
From now to the year-end, whirlwinds, downpours, flash floods and landslides are likely to strike Vietnam's mountainous northern provinces, said the center.
Flash floods and landslides triggered by Typhoon Bebinca in the country's northern and central regions have killed 10 people and left three others missing, the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control said on Monday.
The floods also destroyed 38 houses, inundated nearly 3,430 other houses, killed over 400 cattle and roughly 30,500 fowls, and slightly damaged 1,500 hectares of aquaculture ponds and three dykes.
Typhoon Bebinca made landfall in the northern and central regions and quickly weakened into a tropical depression on Friday, said the committee.
