Bangkok (FN), Aug. 16 – Senior officials of Ministry of Telecommunications, Technology, Digital Network from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand gathered at the “CLMVT 2018 Forum: Taking-off through technology”, held at Centara Grand and Bangkok Convention Center; they agreed on promoting high-speed internet access across the five countries by 2020 for the development of digital economy.
Chea Manith, Under Secretary of State of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, one of the forum speakers, stated that the CLMVT mechanism will enable the five member states to move forward together at a time.
He said Cambodia can achieve high-speed internet access nationwide thanks to the infrastructure that Cambodia possesses and the reserved budget for expanding the network in Cambodia.
As of June 2018, Cambodia has 12 million internet users, according to the official report by the Telecommunications Regulator of Cambodia.
Currently, Cambodia has seven telecommunications operators, eight fixed-line operators, 34 Internet service providers, and 20 voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) operators.
Im Vutha, a member of the Telecom Regulator of Cambodia, said that the growth of the telecommunication sector in Cambodia has been driven by increased telecommunication services, 7% of Cambodia's annual economic growth for two decades, and the spread of knowledge on technology of Cambodian people.
CLMVT forum aims to strengthen economic ties and regional networks among CLMVT countries, including Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand. The forum also discussed to promote regional cooperation amidst challenges in the context of current global trade, with emphasis on the use of digital technology for inclusive and sustainable economic development among top business people, new entrepreneurs, leading policy makers, academics and younger generations from CLMVT countries.
