CAIRO, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian Interior Ministry said on Thursday it has pardoned and released more than 700 prisoners on the 66th anniversary of the July 23 Revolution.

A specialized ministerial committee has carefully chosen 719 prison inmates who deserve to be pardoned, the ministry said in a statement on its Facebook page.

The move comes in line with presidential decree to pardon some prisoners on the Revolution that toppled monarchy and established a republican system in Egypt.

Usually, the president in Egypt issues pardon decrees for prisoners on public holidays and feasts, including two religious Muslims feasts -- holy month of Ramadan and the July 23 Revolution anniversary.
