BANGKOK, July 23 (Xinhua) -- A record haul of nearly 10 million methamphetamine tablets was seized on Sunday on the northern outskirts of Bangkok, a police general said on Monday.
Narcotics Suppression Bureau police raided a building in Khlong Luang district of Pathum Thani province, about 40 km north of Bangkok, where an estimated 9,859,000 speed pills were found hidden inside, according to Deputy National Police Commissioner General Pol. Gen. Chalermkiat Srivorakhan.
In addition, the police seized 50 grams of crystal methamphetamine alongside nearly 10 million speed pills.
Two suspected drug traffickers, identified as Chirawat Chat-ngern and Wathanyu Kaenchai, narrowly escaped on Saturday night. A police helicopter and dogs joined in the hunt for drug suspects who currently remained at large.
They had been allegedly hired by those connected with southern Wa rebels who allegedly ran the massive production of the methamphetamine in Myanmar's Shan state, opposite Chiang Rai province in northern Thailand, according to the deputy police chief.
