Phnom Penh (FN), July 20 - The Royal Government of Cambodia, through the Ministry of Economy and Finance, approved a 10% additional budget to support the Cambodian Mine Action Sector.
The decision on additional funding reflects the government's strong commitment in addressing issues of land mines and Explosive Remnant of War (ERW), which negatively impacts economic and social development.
Senior Minister Ly Thuch, 1st Vice President of Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA), said that Prime Minister Hun Sen always cares about people’s living conditions in the affected areas, especially disabled people who suffered from mines and ERW.
He added that families of mine action sectors and people living in the affected areas would like to express deep gratitude to the premier for his efforts in mine activities to ensure security for the residents.
"Assisting mine action sector is the government's effort to reduce rural poverty," Ly Thuch added.
Cambodia significantly reduced poverty rate to below 10% in 2017 compared to 50% in 1992 and absolute poverty in 1979.
Thanks to peace and political stability, Cambodia’s economy has been among the fastest growing economies, unmatched by any other post-conflict society for the past two decades. Better yet, Cambodia has moved up classification wise into a lower-middle income economy by the World Bank Group in 2016.
