Phnom Penh (FN), July 19 - Phay Siphan, Cambodian government spokesman responded to Malaysian parliamentarian Wong Chen’s statement concerning Cambodian political situation.
The spokesman said Thursday that such concern was expressed by an individual tends to the opposition.
Wong Chen claimed that Malaysia has the obligation to participate, defend, and promote the democracy of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
Government Spokesman, however, said that Wong Chen’s claim was a misunderstanding, as it violated the principles of the ASEAN - no interferences into any member’s internal affairs.
"Wong Chen did not follow up the true nature of ASEAN's process of respect for human rights and democracy. At each ASEAN Summit, ASEAN has raised clear principles and mechanisms for achieving its implementation in the field of human rights and democracy as a whole. Therefore, this person's claim not only shows arrogance and ignorance in ASEAN's Code of Conduct, but also proves to be a shameless actor in the region,” said Phay Siphan.
He reminded Wong Chen from the People's Justice Party (PKR) that he was only a representative of his small constituency, and that he holds no power to interfere into Cambodian internal affairs.
The spokesman urged Wong Chen to strive to develop human rights and democracy only in his country, Malaysia, which is under his jurisdiction.
Phay Siphan stressed that ASEAN has principles and mechanisms for developing human rights and democracy in the region to maintain the unity of ASEAN member states and to embrace ASEAN values, which are different from Wong Chen's misleading claim.
