(Phnom Penh): German Ambassador to Cambodia Stefan Anton Messerer visited the border region in Oddar Meanchey and Siem Reap on 1 August 2025, following the recent ceasefire agreement, and viewed the General Border Committee (GBC) meeting as a vital step toward rebuilding trust and stability.
Germany Embassy Cambodia wrote on Monday (Aug. 4).
“As Cambodia and Thailand convene today, 4 August, for the General Border Committee (GBC), Ambassador Stefan Messerer’s recent visit to the border region in Oddar Meanchey and Siem Reap on Friday, 1 August, together with Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn and members of the diplomatic community, serves as a timely reminder that at the heart of every conflict are real lives, and real people.
In the wake of the recent ceasefire, the visit shone a light on the plight of internally displaced people, communities forced to leave their homes, caught between uncertainty and hope.
He reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting peace through dialogue, emphasizing that those most affected, particularly displaced individuals and families, must not be forgotten in the diplomatic process. Their safety, dignity, and right to return home in peace must remain central to all efforts toward de-escalation and reconciliation.
Germany welcomes the convening of the GBC as a vital step toward rebuilding trust and stability. Sustainable peace requires more than negotiated agreements, it requires listening to those whose voices are often furthest from the negotiation table, yet closest to its consequences.”
