(Phnom Penh): Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian Senate, expressed hope that Thailand will see a change in its leadership within the next three months. He stated that a new leader could help strengthen relations between Cambodia and Thailand.

Samdech Techo spoke on Thursday (Jun. 26) during his visit to extend well wishes and inspect the situation of Cambodian troops stationed along the Thai border.

He further stated that Thailand’s internal conflict has spilled over into a border dispute with Cambodia. He emphasized that this situation is not a normal occurrence in Thai politics. Samdech Techo Hun Sen underscored that not all of Cambodia’s neighbours harbour hostility toward the country—only a very small group driven by extreme nationalist ambitions seeks to undermine Cambodia.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen stated, “I also hope that there will be a change in prime minister in Bangkok. I think that, in my view, it will be around three months before a new prime minister is appointed, but based on the situation, it might even be sooner.”

He recalled that the former military-backed prime minister who led Thailand for nearly a decade never had any issues with Cambodia. Therefore, he stressed that it is essential to set long-term objectives for resolution, noting that even a crisis like this reflects the evolving dynamics of the times.
