(Sihanoukville): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced significant progress in extending the national electricity grid to multiple islands via undersea power transmission lines, providing residents with convenient and affordable access to electricity from the national grid.

Samdech Thipadei noted that the islands already connected include Koh Rong, Koh Sramoch, Koh Thmei, Koh Totung, Koh Ampil Toch, Koh Ampil Thum, Koh Samit, Pineapple Island, Koh Smach, and Koh Sdach. In addition, the connection to Koh Pos is being routed beneath the bridge. These islands are located in Preah Sihanouk and Koh Kong provinces.

The extension of the national grid to these islands not only improves residents’ quality of life but also facilitates investment and tourism development in the island regions.

The premier spoke on Thursday (May 1) during his meeting with civil servants, staff, and workers of the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port.

“Undersea electricity networks have already been built to reach many islands […] and Electricité du Cambodge is currently constructing a medium-voltage undersea transmission line from Koh Rong to Koh Rong Sanloem. This project, with a budget of USD 3 million, is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. We are continuing to extend the grid across our islands,” the premier underscored.

According to a report from Electricité du Cambodge, as of 2024, Cambodia’s developed electricity generation capacity has reached 5,044 megawatts. Transmission infrastructure now spans 3,890 kilometres, with 70 substations in operation. The national electricity grid currently covers all 25 capital and provincial administrations.

Moreover, the development of medium- and low-voltage networks has expanded to 99,257 kilometres, allowing the national grid to reach 99.15% of all villages and directly supply electricity to 95.24% of households nationwide.
