(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet affirmed that the Royal Government will do its utmost to protect Cambodia’s interests, particularly by diversifying trade with other countries. He highlighted that during the New Year holiday, the negotiating team with the US did not take a break, working tirelessly to protect Cambodia’s trade interests.

The premier spoke on Sunday (Apr. 27) during his meeting with leaders of Informal Economic Associations at OCIC, Phnom Penh.

Samdech Thipadei added, “Over the past decades, what the government has done is no different from a mother raising her children — working honestly to create jobs for the people’s children, that’s all. The decisions made by the United States are beyond our control. We have no choice but to work harder to sustain what we have built for the benefit of our people.”

Despite the challenges, Samdech Thipadei noted that just 37 hours after the US announced a tariff hike, the Royal Government issued a policy response, demonstrating its willingness to resolve the matter. We are not stubborn. Even if we believe we are not at fault, we must prioritise the people’s welfare. Some may criticize the government for being slow to negotiate, but we are focused on protecting the interests of the people.”

The premier continued, “The government is often criticised and looked down upon — not only by foreigners but also by some politicians who claim to care for workers yet only attack the government. While the government works to protect our people, these individuals have not asked the US to reconsider their measures. Protecting the interests of our people — this is the government’s duty: protecting livelihoods and ensuring the growth of our economy. What more can we say?”

To safeguard the livelihoods of the Cambodian people, the negotiating team continued working without any breaks, even during the traditional New Year holiday. The government remains committed to protecting the “rice bowl,” the economy, and the jobs of all Cambodian citizens.
