Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 28 – Despite the challenge of securing foreign investment for the Funan Techo Canal project, Cambodia is determined to build this crucial project.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet spoke on Sunday (Apr. 28) during his meeting with more than 5,000 representatives of informal economy at OCIC, Phnom Penh.

The support for the Funan Techo Canal Project has become a strong national movement following the announcement by Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen.

"We welcome and encourage investment from foreigners, but I would like to stress that with or without foreign investment, Cambodia can still make this project happen. We have already prepared three scenarios as Sun Chanthol and I have discussed," the premier underscored.

Although the premier did not reveal the details of the three scenarios, he expressed hope that he will have the opportunity to take a cruise on the Funan Techo Canal while construction may commence at the end of 2024 or in 2025.

Samdech Thipadei mentioned that the budget for the construction of the Funan Techo Canal Project has been reserved. The Royal Government has no plans to raise funds for the construction of the project.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet publicly sought the support of all Cambodians to form a strong national movement aimed at realising the Funan Techo Canal Project.

On the occasion, Premier Hun Manet also questioned traitor Sam Rainsy about his ill intentions and motives against the project. In this sense, he urged reflection upon the profit or loss incurred by utilising domestic canals versus investing in external routes, and urged Rainsy to prioritise national interest.

The Funan Techo Canal Project aims to connect waterways between rivers to the sea of Cambodia, passing through Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep provinces. It is about 180 kilometres long. The project is expected to cost about USD 1.7 billion and has been studied in detail.
