Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 21 – Cambodian Minister of Mines and Energy Keo Rattanak stated that Cambodia has sufficient capacity to export clean energy for sale to Singapore, addressing a press conference on 21 November 2023 at Sokha Hotel Phnom Penh.

Keo Rattanak underscored that "Cambodia possesses sufficient capacity to export clean energy to Singapore, similar to the way orders for clothes are fulfilled, as the Electricité Du Cambodge (EDC) is currently not facing shortages. The key factor for such exports is a robust network connection, and with little need to buy electricity from neighboring countries, Cambodia is well-positioned”.

At the same time, the minister highlighted that Singapore heavily relies on gas for about 95 per cent of its electricity production, leading to higher electricity prices compared to Cambodia.

On the occasion, the energy minister underlined that Singapore had discussed with Cambodia about connecting submarine line from Singapore to Cambodia via Malaysia and Vietnam. This connection would extend to Laos, allowing Cambodia to supply power to Singapore.

The decision to export clean electricity to Singapore reflects Cambodia's willingness to share its clean energy resources with neighboring countries in the region.
