Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 20 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet considered the market demand and farmers’ income during harvesting more important than specific crop or livestock selection, speaking on Monday (Nov. 20) at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

In this sense, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet emphasized that the crucial aspect of agricultural endeavors is not necessarily what is grown or raised but ensuring farmers have a market and substantial income during harvest seasons.

"For me, the key in agriculture is not about what we grow or raise. The crucial aspect is to ensure that whatever is planted or raised leads to a bountiful harvest, has a thriving market, and generates substantial income for farmers. That is a big goal”, Samdech Thipadei underscored.

However, the premier advised against compelling immediate changes, emphasizing the need for a clear and concise explanation, along with visible results. Using the example of transitioning from traditional farming to cashew cultivation, he stressed the importance of transparent communication.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet continued in order to meet the type of modern agriculture, encompassing budget allocation, equipment upgrades, and a contemporary approach to keep pace with the current landscape are necessary. In particular, for products facing tough competition, the agricultural team must help farmers by providing maximum support.

When farmers earn more and become a common force, it will open door of opportunity to compete with other countries, the premier added.

The six priority policy programs include:
1. Expansion of health care services towards global health coverage
2. Vocational and technical training for underprivileged youth nationwide
3. Establishment of a national social assistance program in times of economic crises and emergencies
4. Introduction and promotion of informal economic development strategies through providing social protection system
5. Establishment of coordination mechanisms and financing programs to boost production, do marketing and maintain reasonable prices for key agricultural products
6. Deployment of agricultural technical officers to all communes and the establishment of farmers' associations in rural areas.
