Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 20 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that it is not a coincidence that foreigners buy rice from Cambodia, that is, from the efforts of the government to open more overseas markets amidst intense global competition.

The premier spoke on Monday (Nov. 20) during the announcement of the 5th and 6th priority policy programs of the seventh-mandate Royal Government, at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet emphasized that the Royal Government of Cambodia, through its ministries and institutions, has exerted significant efforts to negotiate for overseas markets, including Free Trade Agreements.

"Of course, while striving to negotiate openings through various free trade agreements for external markets, it is essential to acknowledge that global competition is intense. The success of exporting six million tons [of domestic agricultural products] in ten months is not coincidental; it requires concerted efforts. Many countries in the world do not automatically purchase products from Cambodia,”, Samdech Thipadei underscored.

In order to ensure competition, the Ministry of Agriculture has launched three political programs, including the promotion of agricultural products, market access, balance of agricultural prices through financial programs, deployment of commune / sangkat agriculture officials, and the development of modern agricultural communities. These three mechanisms aim at increasing efficiency and ensuring the competitiveness of Cambodia's agricultural sector.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei also emphasized that the 5th and 6th priority policy programs of the Royal Government are dedicated to enhancing and optimizing Cambodia's agricultural potential.

At the same time, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also congratulated the Cambodian Sen Kra-ob (SKO) fragrant rice which won the gold award at the 1st China-ASEAN Taste Quality Appraisal Activities of High-Quality Indica Rice Variety organized by the Rice Research Institute of the Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Seed Management Station, in China on 28 October 2023.
