Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 16 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated Cambodia will not raise electricity prices despite the current global energy crisis, speaking on Thursday (Nov. 16) during an inauguration for the official launch of Siem Reap Angkor International Airport in Siem Reap province.

The premier underscored the Royal Government's commitment to supporting the tourism sector by implementing a three-month discount in electricity prices for tour operators during the high season.

"Despite the ongoing global energy crisis, I affirmed that Electricite du Cambodge (EDC) has successfully stabilised electricity prices in Cambodia throughout the year. Although the state has incurred some losses, our dedicated efforts have preserved affordable electricity for the people," Samdech Thipadei underscored.

The premier continued, "during the three-month peak season, EDC has considered offering a 15 per cent discount on electricity consumption for tour operators including hotels, guesthouses, supermarkets, restaurants for the entire Kingdom of Cambodia.”

In 2022, the government spent nearly USD 200 million on electricity bills due to the COVID19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war. Despite these challenges, Cambodia produced nearly 80 per cent of its electricity domestically, while only 20 per cent purchased from Laos, Viet Nam and Thailand.

Currently, Cambodia has the capacity to generate 3464 MW of power domestically from solar energy, hydropower, biomass, coal and oil, and the current highest demand for electricity is only about 2,400 MW, meaning that Cambodia possesses the ability to generate more energy than required, ensuring that the nation does not face a shortage of electricity.
