Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 14 – Cambodian giant freshwater stingray, named Boramey, weighing 300 kilograms, broke the Guinness World Records for the world's largest recorded freshwater fish ever.

Cambodian Secretary of State of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Has Sareth underlined that this achievement is a national pride, speaking at the International Workshop on the Current Status of Giant Freshwater Stingrays in the Mekong River and Guinness World Records Certification and Celebration, held on Tuesday (Nov. 14) at Himawari Hotel, Phnom Penh.

"The giant freshwater stingray was named Boramey, meaning full moon, because of its round shape and was released back to the river on the full moon day," Has Sareth underscored.

The secretary of state called on citizens residing along the Mekong River to collaboratively engage in the preservation and conservation of fisheries resources. In addition, the Fisheries Administration of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries has forged close partnerships with relevant institutions, sub-national administrations, and development stakeholders. This collaborative effort aims to bolster the management, protection, and conservation of fisheries resources, particularly along the Mekong River in Kratie and Stung Treng provinces, where freshwater fisheries face imminent threats.

Furthermore, the Fisheries Administration actively collaborates with development partners to conduct comprehensive studies and research on fisheries science techniques.
