Changsha (FN), Oct. 26 – A group of world broadcasting leaders visited the construction site of the T3 terminal project of Changsha International Airport of China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) to witness firsthand the application of smart, green, and digital construction technologies.

The media group visited the smart exhibition hall, safety experience center, observation tower, and the exhibition areas of green construction, safety management, quality models, and excellence models to gain a deeper understanding of the details and measures involved in the construction process.

The person in charge of the construction site told the group that the construction was steadily progressing, and the topping out of the concrete main structure in the area unaffected by the construction of other transport projects of the transport hub including the terminal was completed on September 30th. He also said the first-area grid lifting, an important milestone, would be completed by October 31st. Since the commencement of the construction, this project has embraced smart empowerment and digital construction concepts throughout the construction process. A series of advanced digital technologies has improved safety and convenience, continuously empowering the accelerated construction of the project.

Digital Technology Empowering “Smart Construction”

During the construction, the project construction team has adhered to the concept of “smart empowerment and digital construction,” actively creating a “digital construction site.” The team has fully utilized core technologies such as the Internet of Things, Big Data, AI, 5G, and the integrated application of BIM (Building Information Modeling) to achieve real-time monitoring, data collection and analysis, and intelligent management of the construction site, which enhanced the comprehensive management level and construction efficiency of the frontline production teams.

The project employs the BIM+ panoramic inspection system, where on-site personnel use handheld panoramic cameras to capture images of the construction site for the system to automatically process the videos into three-dimensional scenes of the site. Comparing and analyzing this against the BIM-designed models enables a comprehensive understanding of the situation of the construction, which in turn improves the efficiency of site inspections. Additionally, fifteen applications, such as a video AI monitoring system, smart safety helmet system, and intelligent monitoring and management system for tower cranes, have collectively created a project information ecosystem of connected collaboration, intelligent production, and scientific management.

Smart Construction Site for Safe and High-Quality Construction

The “Smart Construction Site” system operates efficiently on the site, with panoramic cameras automatically synthesizing panoramic monitoring feeds and daily time-lapse footage being used for project review. AI modules enable automatic monitoring, providing a round-the-clock safeguard for the project’s progress.

According to the person in charge of the project, during the early stages of construction, the project used BIM for overall modeling and carried out the comprehensive application of integrated layout techniques for mechanical and electrical pipelines. This effectively improved construction quality by facilitating a reasonable connection of procedures during each specialty installation stage. During the construction, on-site measurement robots were used to efficiently and completely record the complex situation of the construction site through 3D laser scanning and simultaneously compare it with the BIM-designed model to expose conspicuously any disparity between the actual work and the model.

Committed to applying digital systems in its entire construction cycle, the project has created a variety of digital application scenarios, which not only effectively improved the precision and efficiency of the construction but also provided solid assurance for the safe construction of the project.

Green Concepts Leading Sustainable Project Development

The project deeply integrates several core technologies, such as green building, renewable energy use, and smart operation and maintenance, aiming to build a green, low-carbon airport terminal. From architectural details to the selection of building materials, the project practices green and low-carbon concepts, adopting 50 green construction techniques.

Among them, the “construction waste reduction and resource utilization technology” can effectively achieve the classification and recycling of construction wastes, sorting waste bricks, tiles, concrete and other materials on the site to “turn waste into treasures.” The green construction online monitoring system can digitally monitor and give early warnings about real-time data of various green construction indicators such as energy consumption, water consumption, noise, dust, and the operation status of large construction equipment on the construction site. The green construction dust reduction technology that can be seen everywhere at the construction site can automatically start the spraying function to reduce dust while monitoring the on-site construction environment.

As a result of all the measures listed above, the project site has been awarded the title of “Changsha Green Construction Demonstration Site and Green Construction Site”.

The T3 terminal project of Changsha International Airport, jointly constructed by China State Construction and other contractors, has a total construction area of about 500,000 square meters, making it the largest single public building in Hunan Province. The terminal consists of a main hall and five concourses, with a radial layout with the concourses resembling the five triangles of this “Changsha Star.” The project belongs to new-generation airports with four characteristics: “safety, green, smart, and humanity.” The project has 75 planned terminal aprons and is expected to be operational by 2026. Once completed, it can accommodate an annual passenger throughput of 40 million people. It will also become a modern integrated transport hub with the most transit options and the highest seamless transfer efficiency in China.
