Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 26 – The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has pledged additional investment with the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, in particular in the operation and maintenance (O&M) of irrigation system to support Cambodia's economic development.

Thor Chetha, minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, held a working discussion with a delegation from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) led by ADB country director for Cambodia Jyotsana Varma on Thursday morning (Oct. 26) at the Ministry.

On the occasion, Thor Chetha asked the ADB to consider investing more in water resources management and meteorology to combat climate change and natural disasters. He also called on the ADB to increase cooperation, and improve long-term plans for investment in water resources and meteorology from 2024-2039 to minimize all types of floods and drought risks and maximize green environment and ecotourism.

In response, the ADB country director pledged to increase investment with the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, in particular in the operation and maintenance (O&M) of irrigation systems to support Cambodia's economic development.

At the same time, both sides also reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen cooperation to promote the management and development of water resources for sustainable development and resilience to climate change.

Thor Chetha thanked ADB for its effective contribution to the socio-economic development of Cambodia, especially the cooperation in the field of water resources and meteorology as ADB has been involved in engineering modernization of water infrastructure to cope with climate change and global warming.

To date, ADB has made continuous investments through the Finance Ministry to modernize medium- to large-scale water resources and meteorological management infrastructure, including two ongoing projects, the Irrigation Agriculture Improvement Project (IAIP) and the Climate-Friendly Agribusiness Value Chains Sector Project (CFACVS). In particular, there are two projects under study, including the Integrated Water Resources Management Project (IWRM) and the Climate Adaptive Irrigation and Sustainable Agriculture for Resilience Project (CAISAR).
