Beijing (FN), Oct. 18 – The Royal Government of Cambodia signed an agreement to allow Chinese companies to conduct a feasibility study on “Funan Techo Canal” project.

The signing ceremony for the project was held under the presidency of Cambodian prime minister Hun Manet on Tuesday evening (Oct. 17) in Beijing.

Deputy prime minister Sun Chanthol, first vice-president of the Council of the Development of Cambodia (CDC) signed the agreement with representatives of the China Bridge and Road Corporation (CRBC).

Chanthol underlined, "today's signing is a step towards another success in Cambodia's major logistic project". He hoped the construction of the project to begin in 2024.

The signing ceremony also included the official launch of the eWPT Cambodia partnership and the signing ceremony between the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of Cambodia and Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.

Tonle Bassac Navigation Road and Logistics System Project was named "Funan Techo Canal” project at the 6th Plenary Session of the National Assembly on 19 May 2023. Later on 7 June 2023, the government decided to establish an inter-ministerial commission to implement the project.

It is the first historic project in Cambodia’s waterway transport sector to connect the Mekong River system and the sea route. The project seeks to elevate the development of socio-economic activities to a higher level, and provide appropriate solutions to challenges and obstacles of the water transport sector.
