Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 6 – National Bank of Cambodia and the Central Bank of Thailand are planning to expand cooperation in sharing consumer credit information to promote responsible and efficient lending.

Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia Chea Serey met with Thai ambassador to Cambodia Cherdkiat Atthakor on Wednesday (Oct. 4) at the National Bank of Cambodia.

Discussions at the meeting focused on the promotion of cooperation between both countries in the past and the exchange of views on new initiatives to further expand cooperation to contribute to the growth of the banking sector and the economies of both countries.

Chea Serey stated that the National Bank of Cambodia and the Central Bank of Thailand have strengthened good cooperation in many areas, such as exchanging visits, sharing experiences on professional work, and providing scholarships for National Bank of Cambodia officials to study higher education in Thailand, and especially cooperation on the existing cross-border payment and transfer systems.

"Thailand is, in fact, the first country in Cambodia to have integrated cross-border payment and transfer systems, which has significantly contributed to supporting trade, investment and tourism in both countries, as well as increasing the use of national currency in the market in line with the goals of the ASEAN Economic Community," the National Bank governor stated.

She added that both central banks have been developing the remittance system for Cambodian workers working in Thailand aiming to ensure secure, fast, and cost-effective transfers to their families in Cambodia.

On the occasion, Chea Serey also attached great importance to expansion of cooperation in sharing consumer credit information between Cambodia and Thailand to promote responsible and efficient lending.

As the two countries 'financial sectors continue to develop rapidly, the governor is optimistic that the two countries' central banks will continue to expand even richer cooperation in the future.

Cherdkiat Atthakor took this opportunity to congratulate Chea Serey on her role as governor of the National Bank of Cambodia and highlighted her prominence in initiating innovative projects to develop Cambodia's financial sector.

He added that these initiatives have not only strengthened the banking and financial system in Cambodia, but also contributed significantly to enhancing cooperation between the two countries, especially in the financial field.

In addition, Cherdkiat Atthakor also commended the leadership of the National Bank of Cambodia for its hard work in promoting the use of Khmer Riel through the introduction of various regulations and promotional campaigns, including the establishment of the Preah Srey Içanavarman Museum to raise public awareness of the benefits of using Khmer Riel and the history of the Cambodian economy and currency.

The ambassador expressed support and readiness to strengthen cooperation between both central banks.
