Phnom Penh (FN), Jul. 20 - Since Cambodia-China agreed to designate 2023 as “Cambodia-China Friendship Year”, Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Cambodia celebrated the 65th anniversary of long-lasting Cambodia-China diplomatic relations on Wednesday (Jul 19) at the Embassy.

To celebrate the fruitful relationship between the two countries, Chinese ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wentian led a group of Cambodian students majoring in International Relations from Asia Euro University to visit the Embassy.

Ambassador Wang has shared several important aspects of the Cambodia-China iron-clad friendship. The ambassador highlighted the strategic leaderships, the significant official visit of the leaders of the two countries as well as development and mutual support for a better shared community.

“Both sides agreed that the traditional friendship between Cambodia and China, forged and carefully nurtured by Cambodian late king father Norodom Sihanouk and chairman Mao Zedong, premier Zhou Enlai and other elder generations of Chinese leaders, is a treasure shared by the two peoples,” said the ambassador.

Ambassador Wang reiterated the new China-Cambodia diamond cooperation, which prioritizes six key areas, including political cooperation, production capacity and quality, agriculture, energy, security and people-to-people exchanges.

“The fruitful relationship between Cambodia and China was remarkably achieved thanks to the Belt and Road Initiatives (BRI). Cambodia has significantly benefited from the BRI as seen through Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone, Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway and Morodok Techo National Stadium,” said the ambassador,

The ambassador continued, “China-Cambodia Free Trade Agreement (CCFTA) entered into force on January 1, 2022. CCFTA is a new milestone in the development of bilateral economic relations and trade, which will further improve the well-being of companies and people of both countries.”

Regarding the CCFTA, the ambassador underlined that the Chinese side is currently pushing the import of Cambodian coconut fruit to the Chinese market, following the imports of mango, banana, longan, and other agricultural products.

Besides the trade cooperation, the ambassador also highly praised the progress of building a community of shared future between Cambodia and China, stating that “building a community of shared future is a pivotal in encouraging prosperity and development for both countries.”

On the occasion, the students have learnt deeply about the unbreakable Cambodia-China relationship and insightful recommendations shared by the ambassador. The students were also invited to engage actively in various activities, such as Hanfu, paper cutting, and Chinese calligraphy, to learn Chinese civilization and experience the rich Chinese traditions and culture.

Ambassador Wang pledged to cooperate with the Cambodian side to offer more scholarships for Cambodian students and encourage youth exchanges between the two countries.

The celebration ended with a food tasting session.

The year 2023 marked the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Cambodia and the 10th anniversary of BRI.

The friendship between Cambodia and China is rooted in the five principles of peaceful coexistence: mutual respect for each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, mutual non-aggression, mutual non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful co-existence. The two countries are jointly addressing common and global challenges, strengthening contacts at all levels and across all platforms, and deepening mutual understanding to ensure they continue great achievements at national, regional and global levels.
