Phnom Penh (FN), Jun. 7 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen expressed his hope that the leaders of ASEAN member countries will support his vision to make ASEAN sports stronger, speaking on Wednesday (June 7) at the groundbreaking ceremony for Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway.

Premier Hun Sen stated, "We want to strengthen unity. We [ASEAN] have more than 600 million people. We want to promote people-to-people ties through sports, including para sports. We also want ASEAN sports to be stronger.”

Samdech continued, “I imagine that one day ASEAN will have its own ASEAN football team and then they can compete with the Chinese football team. ASEAN has more than 600 million people, while China has more than 1,400 million people."

Meanwhile, Samdech also mentioned that the ASEAN football team can have two players from each member country and can compete in a friendly match with countries outside the region. Through this, ASEAN could bid to host major sporting events such as the World Cup and the Olympics.
