Sihanoukville (FN), May 1 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen explained why the king will not preside over the opening ceremony of SEA Games.

The premier spoke on Monday (May 1) at a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of Sihanoukville container terminal.

“They [critics] said that we do not invite the king to preside over the opening ceremony of the SEA Games. The king already lighted the torch,” the premier underlined.

Samdech continued, “there are only three countries in ASEAN that their heads of states preside over the opening ceremony. Since Indonesia adopted the presidential system, there is no prime minister. The Philippines has only a president and a vice president, and Brunei has a king, who is both the head of state and the prime minister. Therefore, other states adopting the parliamentary system have prime ministers preside over the opening ceremony.”
