Phnom Penh (FN), May 27 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen said that Cambodia is not overly dependent on China and China has no intention of putting the kingdom into debt trap.

The premier responded to the question from Japanese journalist at the 27th International Conference on “the Future of Asia” under the theme "Redefining Asia's Role in a Divided World", held in a hybrid format on Friday (27 May) in Tokyo, Japan.

"I want to clarify that we are not overly dependent on China and is not trapped by China. Besides China, we borrow the fund from other countries, including Japan,” the premier underlined.

“We are aware of the debt and also the debt regulation. The legislated amount of borrowing fund from foreign countries is up to 40 per cent of our total gross domestic product, but so far, we have only reached 23 per cent,” the premier continued

"Cambodia does not put herself in debt trap of any country. Besides China, we also borrow from Japan, Korea, the Asian Development Bank, the World Bank, as well as from European Bank,” the premier added.
