Washington (FN), May 13 – As the rotating chair of ASEAN, Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen reiterated Cambodia’s efforts to address the Myanmar crisis as well as emphasized the kingdom’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine war.

The premier spoke during a luncheon between ASEAN leaders and the US congress members, hosted by the speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi on 12 May 2022 (Washington time) at the Capitol Hill.

The meeting raised some important issues related to strengthening and expanding ASEAN-US cooperation.

At the meeting, the ASEAN leaders wanted the US to continue playing key role in many priority sectors such as security, environment, climate change, health care, in particular COVID19 pandemic, which the US had donated COVID19 vaccines and other aids to ASEAN countries. At the same time, ASEAN leaders would like to strengthen and expand ASEAN-US economy on the existing agreement on trade and investment.

During the meeting, Nancy presented many global issues, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine, maritime security, as well as the South China Sea, in particular global security and economic cooperation. The meeting also discussed priority issues such as sustainable development and building a long-term partnership.

Premier Hun Sen, in his capacity as the ASEAN chair talked about how prolonged Russia-Ukraine war challenges the global economy.

Samdech also highlighted the US’s contributions to assisting ASEAN member states, especially in capacity building and technology. Samdech also mentioned Cambodia-US bilateral cooperation. Cambodia-US trade has increased significantly by over 40 percent in the first quarter of 2022.

Lastly, premier Hun Sen highlighted his effort as the ASEAN’s chair with the help of ASEAN secretary-general to resolve Myanmar crisis by pushing for a ceasefire and the delivery of humanitarian assistance to the Myanmar citizens without discrimination.
