Washington (FN), May 11 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen stated that Cambodia-US relations are better under this mandate compared to the previous regimes.

The premier said he wanted to see a better Cambodia-US relations, speaking in a courtesy call from US Senator Tammy Duckworth on 11 May 2022 (Washington time).

The premier mentions that Cambodia-US relations nowadays are better than never before compared to the past times when there were burning, temporary halting, and the closure of US embassy.

Samdech Hun Sen also highlighted the improvement of economic, trade and investment relations between Cambodia and the United States. In 2021, despite global COVID19 crisis, Cambodia-US trade volume increased by about 30 percent, and in the first quarter of 2022, trade volume between the two countries has increased by about 40 percent.

The premier asked the US Senator to further promote US investment in Cambodia due to favorable good investment climate and incentives provided by Cambodian government.

Head of Cambodian government Hun Sen also highlighted that Ream Naval Base development is part of strengthening Cambodian defense sector, not to serve any foreign troops. Cambodia, time and again, clarified that the Kingdom will not allow any countries to setup a military base on her territory.

Delegate minister Kao Kim Hourn quoted the premier as saying that "Cambodia is not under any country. The kingdom is an independent and sovereign nation. So, we do not need foreign troops on Cambodian territory."

Samdech Techo Hun Sen confirmed that currently, the port of Sihanoukville welcomes Chinese, American, Japanese, Indian and Australian ships to dock at Cambodian ports without discrimination.

He also highlighted the democratic process in Cambodia, saying Cambodia will organize the election campaign of the 5th Commune/Sangkat Council Election on 21 May and the election will be held on June 5, with 17 political parties competing.

In response, the US Senator thanked Samdech Techo Hun Sen for his willingness to engage with the United States. She also thanked Cambodia for voting against Russian aggression and thanks for the efforts in resolving issues in Myanmar.
