Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 21 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen instructed the Ministry of Health to study the possibility to legalise kidney transplant operation in the kingdom.

The premier spoke in an inauguration of the Cambodia-China Friendship Preah Kossamak Hospital on Monday.

Cambodia has the capacity to perform the kidney transplant surgery since 2010 at Preah Ket Mealea Hospital, but it had not yet publicised.

Some of our people have travelled abroad to get the organ transplant, which is costly. If we do not allow surgery here, they will have no other choices. Therefore, we should consider legalising transplant surgery in the kingdom,” the premier added.

In this regard, premier Hun Sen also warned that legalizing this kidney transplant does not mean permitting organ trafficking. The operation is allowed when an organ is donated by family member.

According to the premier, the Cambodia-China Friendship Preah Kossamak Hospital has the capacity to conduct kidney and liver transplant surgeries.
