Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 20 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen and Japanese prime minister Kishida Fumio agreed to elevate the existing strategic partnership to a new level.

The joint decision was made towards the 70th Anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relationship and the 10th Anniversary of strategic partnership between Cambodia and Japan in 2023.

“The two prime ministers consented to elevate the bilateral relationship under a “strategic partnership” based on strong trust between the two governments and peoples to a new stage as well as to conduct necessary studies toward that goal in a concrete manner between their diplomatic authorities,” according to a joint statement seen by Fresh News on Sunday.

According to premier Hun Sen, in addition to bilateral cooperation, the two prime ministers also shared the recognition that both countries’ relationship is at the best level ever and pledged to further promote the bilateral cooperation in the multilateral framework and on regional and international issues.

Premier Hun Sen also thanked the Japanese counterpart for his support for Cambodia’s chairmanship of ASEAN Summit 2022 and reaffirmed the cooperation for the success of this chairmanship.

The two Prime Ministers highly valued the fact that the Mekong-Japan cooperation is playing an essential role for the sustainable development of the Mekong region, and concurred on the further promotion of the Mekong-Japan cooperation.
